As people age, so does their skin. Wrinkles and blemishes in the skin contribute to what we think of when we think of someone as “old.” Since few people want to be thought of as looking old, the market for skin care products that are designed for “anti aging” or “skin rejuvenation” has exploded in the past few years.

These products range from “rejuvenating” skin creams to Botox, a chemical which actually paralyzes the skin near wrinkled areas, causing it to relax. Both creams and Botox can provide good results, although individual results will vary from person to person.

The best thing that anyone can do for their skin is to take proactive steps to avoid things that can cause premature aging. Below are some tips that will help you take care of your skin and prevent premature aging.

Get plenty of sleep – Stress and lack of sleep are common causes of premature skin aging. The average adult gets two to three fewer hours of sleep each night than people did a century ago. Sleep is important, and you should strive to obtain at least 8 hours of sleep per day.

Cut back on caffeine – Too much coffee or energy drinks can have adverse affects on your skin as well as your heart. A little bit can go a long way, so try to cut back if you can.

Quit smoking – The adverse health effects of smoking have been long documented. Nothing ages a person prematurely quite like cigarette smoking does. If you’re a smoker, you could do your skin a big favor by quitting as soon as possible.

Get regular exercise – Regular exercise increases blood flow to the skin, which has many blood vessels. You don’t need to run marathons, but a good workout three or four times per week can go a long way towards helping you stay in shape and maintain a youthful appearance.

Drink plenty of liquids – Your body doesn’t need coffee, soda, or alcohol. Your body needs water, and lots of it. The commonly heard suggestion that you drink 8 glasses of water a day is a good one. Well-hydrated skin is healthy skin. You don’t need to drown yourself, but try to drink a lot of water each day.

Avoid the sun – Tanning is quite popular these days and lots of people want that “healthy” glow that comes from a tan, be it a natural one or one obtained at a tanning facility. Unfortunately, nothing harms your skin more than sunlight. A bit of exposure to the sun is healthy, as the body produces Vitamin D from sunlight. But if you are going to be in the sun for more than a few minutes, you should wear sunscreen. And you should never use a tanning bed, as prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation can potentially cause skin cancer.

Protect your eyes – When going out in the sun, don’t forget to protect your eyes. Getting sunscreen in your eyes is a bad idea, as it can burn and be quite uncomfortable. Instead, you should purchase a quality pair of sunglasses and get in the habit of wearing them whenever you are outdoors.

Skin creams, Botox and other treatments for aging, wrinkled skin can certainly help postpone the dreaded “old look”, but as the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A few good habits can help you look younger than your age for decades to come.

Ladies…and gentlemen, what are some great skin care tips, tricks, and products you’d like to share?

For me, I’ve found that the panoxyl bar with 10% benzoyl peroxide is the best way to get rid of acne. I also recommend all guys with acne – shave with your acne cleanser as your shaving cream! I also use the Olay microdermabrasion kit, and wow after the 3rd time I’ve used it, I noticed a huge difference. Bare Escentuals is the only makeup I wear, and I love it!

I know the best trick in the world–don’t shower. I’m not kidding. The best thing for your skin is the oil it naturally produces. If you only shower maybe twice a week you’ll stay looking 20% younger than people your age who shower all the time. I shower more often than that but I don’t give a crap about my skin.

Behind the glossy images in magazines, and on television, there lies dangerous anti-aging secrets.

Most skin care products, even the “natural” ones, contain many harsh chemicals used in industrial processes.

These chemicals are known to cause a wide range of adverse health effects, ranging from skin irritation to cancer.
But the skin care companies don’t want you to know this.

If you knew the truth, you’d have second thoughts about buying many of the most popular skin care products on the market……even the expensive brands.

You can stop aging by educating yourself on effective anti-aging skin care and use anti-aging products that will work for you and your skin.
