Neurology, the scientific study of the brain, is a relatively young field of study compared to other branches of science. Due to the complexity of how a brain works, scientist were never able to see how a brain works until recent years.
With technological improvements and sophisticated equipments, neurologists are now able to observe the intricate workings of the brain. This is why it’s only in recent years, 1998 to be exact, that neuroscientists found out that the brain is capable of “neurogenesis”, a process in which your brain grows new brain cells.
Although there was a handful of scientists who believed otherwise, before 1998, the accepted view is that the brain is fixed and if you suffer from cognitive decline, there’s really nothing anyone can do about it. Now we know otherwise.
In this article, I’ll introduce to some techniques that you can adopt to encourage neurogenesis. This is beneficial not just for the older generation because the more brain cells you possess, the better your brain function is. You could learn faster, remember better, react faster and even live an overall happier life.
So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started.
1. Various studies involving brain scans found that every thought that passes through your mind affects your brain just like an action would. For example, when you practice a certain skill over a period of time, your brain will learn and thus you’ll master the skill. But a scientific study showed that mental practice alone can yield the same result.
This sort of “visualizations”, thus stimulates the brain. Stimulation, as I have mentioned before, encourages neurogenesis. Scientists have always observed how people who think positively tend to live a healthier life – now they know why.
2. You don’t use, you lose. This is the first principle that governs the way your brain works. I mentioned previously how practice makes perfect. This is because as you practice, your brain grow new brain cells, called neurons, and creates synapses between those neurons.
Synapses allow the brain to work more efficiently by creating cause-and-effect relationships between neurons. Neurons that fire together, wire together through these synapses so that they’ll always fire together.
But these synapses break down if the neurons no longer fire together. Thus if you spend most of your time sitting down, or if you live an extremely sedentary life, it is inevitable for you to lose your ability to balance yourself on your legs as the synapses in you motor cortex breaks down.
This can be seen in people who were in a serious accident and had their legs in a cast for months on end. Though physiologically we should not have any problem walking, they often couldn’t because they need to relearn it.
Thus frequent exercise, something as simple as a slow walk, could prevent you from losing your independence later in old age. The same applies to your memory and your learning ability. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.
3. Neurogenesis require energy to be carried out. Most of the energy that you possess, you acquire from your diet. Thus by consuming a healthy diet is crucial to a health brain. Stimulation alone will not be sufficient if your brain do not have the building block for neurogenesis.
Generally speaking, any food beneficial for your body will be beneficial for your brain. The first change you should make to your diet is to consume more leafy green vegetables. This is because they contain large amount of anti-oxidants, which combat the process of oxidation. As you might have known, oxidation kills cells – including brain cells.
But there’s one particular vitamin that I want to single out here in this article. Vitamin B12, is crucial for normal cognitive function but unfortunately, it cannot be found in any plant source. Beef and eggs are excellent sources of B12 but if you’re a vegan, be sure to supplement your diet with this vitamin.
Extreme cases of B12 deficiency can cause psychosis and mania.
4. You can get most brain stimulation from your daily life. But if you want to reverse a particular condition – say memory loss or even Alzheimer’s – or if you want to improve a particular function of your brain, I would recommend that you perform specially designed brain exercises.
There are various brain exercises, ranging from those that stimulate auditory processing to those that stimulates visual processing. Because these exercises are specially designed, they are generally more effective at correcting a specific problem than general techniques that you can do yourself.
Brain exercises that targets the auditory processing, for example, increases your ability to make out sounds and thus allows you to remember verbal stimulus better (things that you hear). Those that targets visual processing, on the other hand, allows you react faster and remember visual stimulus better (such as the written word and facial recognition).
Thus it is a mistake to assume that brain exercises benefits only the older generation. Fact is, everyone could use a little brain exercises to improve mental functions.

Will using Vitamin A and D3 and E, from cutting open gel caps, help protect skin, or reverse signs of aging?
How is the vitamin A in the gel cap different from retinol A? Do any of these help lessen wrinkles, accelerate cell turnover &/or lighten skin?I am referring to cutting open the gel caps and applying to my skin. I have done it a couple of times with no adverse reaction, but will it help? Anything safe that will increase cell turnover or tighten skin? (weight loss=saggy neck especially) Does vitamin C help? If so, in what way, please? Thanks!
when you use vitamin e capsules you need to make sure it say d-alpha tocopherol on the back..that is the natural vitamin e ..anything else is synthetic…the real vitamin e capsules can be found anywhere and will reduce scarring and wrinkles and even eliminate them sometimes..even old scars…pop open the capsule and spread on face at night to sleep….it is thick and at first it may seem your skin gets worse….but you have to keep going and push past this point…eventually you will notice your skin absorbs it much more readlily and it starts to work…the skin works in 21 day cycles…if you notice significant changes after doing it 21 days every night straight then keep using it. You should also take it internally 400 iu per day. If you cant handle the stickyness try this…wash face at night…pop open capsule , spread on face generously, (dont forget your lips) ..then take a warm/wet washrag or paper towel and lay it over your face and gently blot off the excess….I have used vitamin e on and off for years..it has virtually eliminated my acne scars and the acne itself. At first it made it kinda worse. At first it was gooey and I hated it ..now I put it on after using it every single night for the last month and my skin just sucks it right up..after 15 minutes I blot the excess leftover if I feel like it…I am 32 and I pretty much have no wrinkles…even if you dont put it all over you can just try one area for starters if that makes you feel more comfortable…like just under your eyes..or only on your forheadbut I also do lots of other things as well …and sometimes I get lazy and my skin suffers for it. I also make handmade lotions and soaps and toners and masks ect..ect…sometimes I just buy a regular lotion and I add my own stuff to it to make it better (like palmers cocoa butter lotion which I love) I may just pop a few capsules of vitamin e oil into it ..this is an easy way to make a lotion unique to you …but if your experimenting I reccomend taking only half the bottle of lotion and putting it into a container and then add your own stuff so you dont waste your lotion if you botch a batch…so maybe you cant make everything from scratch, but you can build upon other things to make them better…. the best thing for your face I have found though which I can never use because it stinks too bad is straight Fish Oil..it works soooooo well …leave it on your wrinkles and do it ever night
Try this you’ll LOVE it !!! Get some brown sugar and some olive oil mix together in a container…put it in a container with a lid …keep it in your shower and gently exfoliate with it on your face and body every day..it is soooooo wonderful…I ALWAYS do this even when I am being lazy..
The brown sugar has natually occuring glycolic acid in it…use this as a BASE and then experiment with other batches by adding other stuff you find interesting into the mix..like essential oils…or the vitamin A and D3 capsules you speak of till you have your own unique mix..sometimes I crushh up asprins into powder and mix it into the batch because it is natually occuring salacylic acid which works for acne…but always AT LEAST just keep the BASE of the sugar and olive oil on hand at all times…if you try and get to complicated you might give up so that is why you should keep the BASE on hand at all times…
Here is a BIG tip I have discovered with trial and error when deciding on skin care lotion…if it burns dont use it…
when I pick out a store bought lotion I find a cut on myself or a raw and chapped area..or like a paper cut..if the lotions soothes it I buy it..if the lotion BURNS dont get it..lotions and creams and salves and oils are suppose to sooth what is irritated from soaps and toners and general all over wear and tear…and dont forget your neck area..try everything and find out what you love..Oh and as far as vitamin C..I have found a liquid form in a gelcap and have used it before…it burned but worked …so now I mix a very small amount of c with ALOT of E..or I just apply mashed foods that have a natually high content of vitamin c in them …like strawberries..or I have used orange juice then wiped it off…I have used tea bags on my eyes..I have slathered myself in chocolate..I have layed in a geliton bath..I have gave myself a seaweed wrap in saran wrap…I have made a bowl of oatmeal and it ended up on my face and neck…I have ate a banana the thought “hmmm..I wonder..” then ended up rubbing the inside of the peel all over my hands to see what it would do…just try different stuff…I have even done facial excersizes..some I liked and felt comfortable with some I didnt feel like were good…I even made up some of my own til I find out what worked…whatever works !!! Trust your gut instincts and try keeping a journal of your experiences …make sure you have a good mirror and try different lighting so you can see the before and after…if you feel something doesnt work ..do not do it…trust yourself to know whats best for you…good luck and above all else…HAVE FUN AND BE HAPPY !!
Behind the glossy images in magazines, and on television, there lies dangerous anti-aging secrets.
Most skin care products, even the “natural” ones, contain many harsh chemicals used in industrial processes.
These chemicals are known to cause a wide range of adverse health effects, ranging from skin irritation to cancer.
But the skin care companies don’t want you to know this.
If you knew the truth, you’d have second thoughts about buying many of the most popular skin care products on the market……even the expensive brands.
You can stop aging by educating yourself on effective anti-aging skin care and use anti-aging products that will work for you and your skin.
