When you go for a swim, you might wonder if the chlorine is bad for your skin. So you take a shower and figure you washed it all off.
The sad fact is that when you take your shower, you are simply adding more chlorine to your skin and that chlorine is bad for your skin, and it’s bad for you. It can actually cause your skin to age faster, since chlorine is so caustic.
But there are some things you can do to reduce the amount of chlorine you get. First let’s look at a little history.
Chlorine was originally added to municipal water systems to destroy the germs that caused cholera and typhoid. Once it was clear that it had worked – there was a significant reduction in the amount of people contracting the diseases – more and more chlorine was added to municipal water systems.
Suddenly, chlorine became a cost effective and easy way to reduce the amount of bacteria and parasites in drinking water.
Today, most municipal drinking water is chlorinated. That means that the water you drink, and the water you clean your skin with is chlorinated, which means you are regularly (though unknowingly) putting this caustic substance into your body and on your body.
The most significant problem with putting chlorine on your body is that it’s drying, extremely drying. You can use all the most amazing moisturizing products in the world, but if you are still showering and bathing in chlorinated water, you’re fighting an uphill battle.
There are some solutions, however.
First, if you swim often, try to reduce the amount of time you spend in the pool. Because pools are generally much more highly chlorinated than drinking water, be sure to shower as soon as you get out of the pool. Salt water pools are becoming popular as they contain mainly salt rather than chlorine. The amount of chlorine in the water you’re using for your shower is less than what you got in the pool and you will at least remove some of that chlorine from your skin and your hair, which will benefit both.
Second, always moisturize as soon as you get out of the pool. Particularly if you have been swimming with your face in the water, apply a good moisturizer after you get out. This alone can do much to combat the drying and aging effects of the chlorinated water.
Third, at home apply water filters to your shower. The filter will reduce by up to 80% the amount of chlorine that’s delivered to your skin. This will do much to help you skin stay healthy and young.
If you wash your face often, remember the moisturizer rule and apply moisturizer as soon as your face is patted dry from washing. If you want to be extreme, consider washing your face in bottled spring water, which contains no chlorine.
Finally, limit your exposure. If you are concerned about the chlorine in your water, don’t soak in the tub for long periods of time, or stand under the shower for longer than you really have to.
Being aware of how damaging chlorine can be to your skin is just one step to giving your skin better care. The next steps are to be educated and to do as much as you can to prevent aging.
